Located just seven miles south of Charleston, West Virginia, this forests close proximity to the heavily populated Kanawha Valley has made it a recreational haven. Some of the states most popular picnic areas are here, along with significant hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing opportunities. Kanawhas swimming pool and playground attract families during the summer season, and the fully equipped campground is one of the few in the Charleston area. The 9,300-acre forest is noted among naturalists for its diverse wildflower and bird populations. Rich cove forest sites provide nesting habitat for 19 species of wood warblers, a feature which draws birders from as far away as Canada

The New River Campground, Inc. purchased November 1998 by the West Virginia Paralyzed Veterans of America, Inc. (WV-PVA, which was started in 1990. Since its founding PVA (national founded in 1947 and chartered by Congress) has been in the forefront in organizing and ensuring quality care, rehabilitation, and assistance to veterans with a spinal cord dysfunction. In addition, PVA assists all handicapped individuals through a broad range of programs designed to allow them fuller access to society. In the United States alone, more than a quarter of a million people have spinal cord injuries
